Credit Cards: A simple primer

Now we haven’t talked about the use of credit cards much lately here, mostly because I have been grumbling about big ticket items like roofs, cars and pets. The article attached is really an elementary description of what a Credit Card is, and how they work, but might be worthwhile for your kids to read. What? You haven’t talked to your kids about how credit cards work? Don’t you think it’s time to do that? My daughter is learning about this at school, comparing the relative interest rates from banks, credit cards and store credit (she hasn’t even looked at Pay Day loan companies), this is an important part of your kids education (unless you want them to rack up HUGE credit card bills, and then move back home because they can’t afford to live), think about it folks, time to teach our kids. –C8j

What is a credit card? by Jason J Mathews

Credit Card is also called as plastic or plastic money. It can be further defined as plastic card that has an account number assigned to the credit card bearer with a specific credit limit. The credit limit is decided upon the monthly income of the applicant. This card when issued can be used to purchase goods and services and to obtain cash payments on credit. At the end of the specified number of days, the cardholder is billed by the card company for repayment of the credit extended at once or on an installment basis.

One of the most important benefits of using a credit card is that you don’t have to carry cash with you. Credit Cards are accepted in almost all businesses around the world. Another important benefit of using a credit card is that you have money for instant shopping. Just imagine your dream dress is being displayed on sale and you don’t have enough bucks in your pocket to buy that dress. With the use of credit card you can not only buy that dress but also get time to repay that amount.

Although there are benefits of using a credit card, one should make sure we are using our credit card when it is really important otherwise you will end up spending more than what you wanted to and it will affect your monthly budget.

I think it’s great that your daughter is learning about interest rates, and credit cards.

The biggest benefit of credit cards may not necessarily be the ability to not carry cash.

IMHO, The biggest benefit for young people to have credit cards is to build the right respect for credit and more importantly, build your credit score.

A tiny caveat… since there are many people who states that if you always pay off your balance each month, you won’t be building your credit score faster than if you carry a balance and always pay it down. Not sure if this is correct!
