Social Networks Predict Epidemics ?

Social networking is the new big buzz for businesses (even Banks) and how they can be used as a competitive advantage. This talk from Nicholas Christakis outlines how in the real world social networking is already being used as a tool, but remember that Face-hole and Tweeter are both also tools being used by Marketing Companies and worse by some very nefarious folks who are looking to find out as much as possible about you, that they can.

Will social networking enter into the Financial World in a strong way? Not sure, but I am sure the banks are trying very hard to figure out how they can cash in on this.

After mapping humans’ intricate social networks, Nicholas Christakis and colleague James Fowler began investigating how this information could better our lives. Now, he reveals his hot-off-the-press findings: These networks can be used to detect epidemics earlier than ever, from the spread of innovative ideas to risky behaviors to viruses (like H1N1).

Interesting ideas, but again, be careful what you tell folks about yourself on the web.

  1. Marketing through social networking is a good idea, but I am not too sure how would people react to it.
As selling a physical product is okay but to promote a financial product through social network especially after so much of internet scams, I doubt anybody would be keen to respond.
