Black Friday is Here, Exciting Tax Calculations and MoneyTalk

Black Friday has arrived (it has been here in terms of Black Friday Sales for the past month, so nothing new in this version of MoneyTalk ). Who will be wasting hours at work to find that ultimate sale? I won’t, I usually end up buying AntiVirus software and that is about it. I always wonder how it is Black Friday, when the mortar and brick stores typically open on Thursday evening?

Where Do They Keep the Left Handed Cheese Straighteners?

I am saddened to hear that all the Turkeys that are pardoned by Presidents, typically died soon after, because “eating turkeys” are bred for white meat not longevity (Today You Learned).

The hottest Thanksgiving topic this year? How to deal with Political Discussions at the dinner table. Whatever happened to discussing candied yam recipes? What is a candied yam, by the by. I do enjoy the exploding deep frying turkeys though, nothing can beat those yearly traditions.

I watched an 8 year old do tax calculations last week, which was really interesting for the first little while, but then it ends up watching someone do Tax Calculations. She did hole hoop nicely though. See the video at the end for details on this. Seems like a lovely young lady (but I wouldn’t want to watch the Blunt Bean Counter do tax calculations either).

My Writings for Week Ending November 25th

After my time at CFPC16, I felt invigorated, so I wrote two articles this week, and have introduced a few new tricks as well.

Not sure whether other folks used the old SRA reading system, but I did, and it struck me that you could use SRA Readers for Financial Literacy and Money Concepts ? That methodology of starting off with more simple topics, and then build to the more complex ones.

The EQ bank folks were at the conference again this year, and one of their folks started talking about making banking more straight forward, so naturally that caused me to resurrect a 50 year old expression with, WYSIWYG Banking. You’ll have to read to figure out what WYSIWYG means (and how to pronounce it as well).

A CPFC16 Thought

The most interesting arrival tweet, by far, but I am not surprised either.

The Heart of MoneyTalk

Met a lot of previous and new friends (notice I didn’t say old) at CPFC16, let’s see what some of them are up to, shall we?

  • I was disappointed to not see my favourite accountant/Blue Team fan at the conference but Mark from Blunt Bean Counter is actually a very busy guy, but he had a great article this week, The Top 10 Estate Planning Mistakes (even though I hate top 10 lists normally).
  • Save with Dan, who kept asking hard questions about why folks seem to think that Quebec financial rules are the same as in the rest of Canada, gives us Lifestyle inflation is a bitch. I like the style!
  • Mark from My Own Advisor was there, he spent a lot of time networking, and this week he gave us, Top U.S. Dividend ETFs for your portfolio – 2016
  • Bridget Eastgaard also talks about lifestyle (a popular topic), with You Need To Do More Than Live Within Your Means, and of course, I agree (and the article has a cute dog too!).
  • The Holy Potato (an old friend), must have heard about the importance of calculators (if you want to build readership), with Robo-Advisor Comparison Calculator. I hope to work with the Holy one on RDSP reform at banks.
  • Barry Choi was the MC at the show, and he managed to get a helpful article for new Tangerine customers (such as I), How to set up an Automatic Savings Program with Tangerine.
  • Stephen Weyman (who I mercilessly razzed about SEO being snake oil), is having a $1000 Cash HUGE Christmas Giveaway 2016!, so I guess SEO really pays!
  • I went to the conference with Michael James (and we were very frugal, maybe we’ll upgrade on the hotel a bit if we go again) and one of the topics was the concept of House Poor, and how there is a generation of home owners who have no idea what can happen when interest rates take off, but MJ hits at the hidden costs that can kill homeowners (even with low interest rates) in The Real Reason Why a Big Mortgage is a Bad Idea

8 Year Old Does Tax Calculations

Could there be anything more cute than watching Carlie do tax calculations? At age 8, I was worrying about other things, but she is cute as a button!

2016 Random Thoughts

My Twitter feed is where I re-tweet many great articles by some of my featured writers (and make the occasional odd or off-color commentary on life (in 140 characters or less)). I am also on reddit, Tumblr, Pinterest , Flipboard, Instagram and other Social Media sites (look for the BigCajunMan userid) as well. If you have social media accounts, don’t forget to vote for my posts (see the nifty dashboard on the bottom of each article, where you can cast your votes). As they say in Quebec, vote early and vote often!

  1. Thanks for the giveaway mention. I started the $1000 giveaway 4 years ago before the site was really making enough money to justify it actually – just paid for it using my paycheque 🙂 It’s a tradition now and I plan to keep it going for years to come.
