Fig Tuesday Financial Foibles

There is no way any AI would puke out that as a title. As I “wind down” in my real job (less than sixty days ’til I am done (not that I am counting)), let’s flex my sarcastic financial perspectives.

What is Fig Tuesday? It’s a Holy Week thing where Christ kills a fig tree (bad synopsis; read here for a more detailed concept). Not a big Fig fan, myself, although I do enjoy a good Fig Newton.

March ends (March 31, 2026, today), and the fiscal year for many folks is today as well.

Auto Fignations

Took my 2024 Rogue in for its semi-annual service yesterday. I wanted the snow tires swapped, which was a bit early here in Ottawa, but I rolled the dice. What I ended up with was:

  • My all-season tires seem worn out. I have had the car for less than two years. Total mileage is 42,000 KM, and I have winter tires. Let's say there are about 26,000 KM on these tires, and they are done? I am a very conservative driver. Why are these tires done? Are they made of bubble gum or pencil erasers? They wanted to sell me tires, I said, no, I'll look around (aka Costco).
  • The Battery (12V) need replacing? WTF? A battery that only lasts 23+ Months? Must be one of those Azerbajan specials (got that comment from a CAA Tow chap who had to jump a previous car). Luckily, it was replaced under my warranty.
  • The car still gets a gas smell sometimes, too.

I am not saying this car seems to be another Lemon, but I do feel I am getting my daily dose of Vitamin C while driving it. Like many Canadians, think I'll be looking into an EV in my near future. Possibly a set of Solar Panels too!

Tax Time

'Nuff said there. You've got a while still, but you had better have all your receipts lined up. Took a while to collate my medical expenses, and my wife seems to have given up on collating her Celiac Food receipts (Gluten-Free Food).

CPP at 65 for Me?

Nope, going to hold on to taking that for a while. I need to figure out my financial baseline, but I don't think I will take it until I am closer to 70. I may change my mind, or die before collecting it. I have never collected EI in my entire 40 years of working. Remember, I was laid off for an entire year in there somewhere.
