Fun Shapes and Measurement

Ted.com has some new videos up, and one of them is by Benoit Mandlebrot, who is a fascinating man who brought us the concept of fractals and such. In this talk he chats about Roughness and its implications to science in specific but also life in general.

At TED2010, mathematics legend Benoit Mandelbrot develops a theme he first discussed at TED in 1984 — the extreme complexity of roughness, and the way that fractal math can find order within patterns that seem unknowably complicated.

His measure of Roughness does even have applications to the financial world, given how unmeasurable money concepts are at times, Mandlebrot has even written books about Fractals and stock prices (The Misbehavior of Markets: A Fractal View of Financial Turbulence).
