Energy Futures with Bill Gates

Energy and what the future holds for Energy is an exciting topic, but one of the last people I thought there was a video talking about it would be Bill Gates. Still, sure enough, Mr. MS-DOS (or CP-M?) has an opinion about what needs to happen in the area of power and Energy going into the future.

Given the mess we are currently in terms of reliance on non-renewable Energy and our inability to innovate a “better” energy source, this is an exciting talk (I disagree with it, but it is interesting).

At TED2010, Bill Gates unveils his vision for the world’s energy future, describing the need for “miracles” to avoid planetary catastrophe and explaining why he’s backing a dramatically different type of nuclear reactor. The necessary goal? Zero carbon emissions globally by 2050.

  1. Very interesting. I never thought in terms of the need to get to zero carbon dioxide emissions. So, if we don’t make progress on research into methods of energy generation that are emissions-free, we’re not getting anywhere. Just reducing emissions by fractions is not a long-term solution.

    1. Depends on what you call an emission as well. Radioactive fuel rods that are “active” for 10’s of thousands of years isn’t really ZERO either, just a different kind (of course we could store it all on the dark side of the moon, but then again, this isn’t Space 1999 either.
